A Mile Closer to the Stars

Programming Division

Mary Morman

Tell us who you'd like to see on programming and what topics you'd like to see discussed! No one of us is as capable as all of us together, so please tell the program committee who you'd like to see on programming and what topics you'd like to see discussed! Fill out our Program Idea Survey We are especially soliciting ideas on programming for anime, comics, graphic novels, and gaming.

The Program participant list is up; we're also working on a Program participant biographies page. Want to be a program participant at Denvention 3? Fill out our Program Participant Survey to tell us about yourself. Have a favorite author, fan, or scientist that you would like to see on programming? Please encourage him or her to fill out the survey so that we know they will be attending the con and will be available for programming. We also have a Worldcon Programming FAQ.

Our crew of staff writers (Dan Kimmel, Theresa Crater, and Ronnie Seagren) are publishing brief bios for our program participants. This will be an ongoing process with new bios posted every week. Check back regularly to see who will be attending and participating in our program events at Denvention 3.

The Programming Division for Denvention 3 is moving into high gear to plan a wide variety of panels and presentations for your enjoyment. We're also running Stargate-14 Boot Camp, a special track for children, the Technology of Reading and for aspiring writers, Rising Stars. We'll also have Readings and Kaffee Klatsches.

Most daytime programming for the Worldcon will be in the Colorado Convention Center. Most late afternoon and evening programming and gaming will be in the Sheraton. Our objective is to arrange things so that you will not need to walk back and forth from the Convention Center to the hotel. We do have a small amount of program space in the Hyatt Regency Denver hotel directly across from the Convention Center that we plan to use for Kaffee Klatsches and readings.

In the Convention center we have 22 programming rooms with space to seat over 4400 people at any given time. Our rooms vary from seating for over 1000 in the main programming room (for opening and closing ceremonies), to intimate 30 person rooms for readings. And of course, that space doesn't even include the wonderful 5000 seat Wells Fargo Theatre that we'll be using for the Hugo Awards Ceremony and the Masquerade. We are currently planning 664 program items at the CCC, but we just might manage to add a couple more.

Special Events

Break out your dress uniforms and best embroidered bolero jackets and join us as we celebrate our guest of honor Lois McMaster Bujold at a "Summerfair on Barrayar" Wednesday evening at the Sheraton hotel. Another dress event will be our whimsical Regency dance event, the Dowager Duchess of Denver's Ball, on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the special events, there's a huge gaming room that will stay open late, and plenty of space for filking, films, and other fannish activities. We look forward to seeing you in August!

Summerfair

Irene Urban

Join us early Wednesday evening in Vorbarr Sultana for the Imperial Summerfair Reception at the Sheraton. We'll have music, dancing, and more fun things to do. Start the convention in style and meet our special guests, including Lois McMaster Bujold, whose wonderful books provided the inspiration for this event.

Mingle with the galactic elite in your best Betan sarong, Komarran trousers, or your own version of interplanetary chic. Don't forget how much Barrayarans appreciate uniforms! Well-behaved off-world mercenary and military members are welcome; please have your legal representative research the laws against dueling. Imp Sec will be watching! Have you ever dreamed of being a spy? Some special activities are planned for the reception. If you feel particularly sneaky and are interested in participating (which may involve a costume and/or playing a role), please e-mail for more details.

Regency Dance: The Dowager Duchess of Denver's Ball

Following long-standing fannish tradition, Denvention 3 will host a Regency Ball on Saturday afternoon in the Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton hotel.

Our dance mistress, Susan de Guardiola, will be teaching several country dances, some waltzes, a quadrille, and few other bits and pieces of period dance. We encourage you to come dressed in your 18th or 19th century best, but we also welcome the normal gamut of con attire from Klingons and elves to t-shirts and jeans.

Our staff is planning a card game room for those not inclined to the dance, and you are welcome to come observe, kibitz, or participate in a rubber of whist or piquet. Please, no faro banks, we run a respectable establishment! If you have ideas, suggestions, or would like assist with setting up or running the ball, please contact .

Strolling With The Stars

Stu Segal

To encourage a healthier, more active environment at Denvention 3 we are scheduling a 9AM walk every morning. We'll leave from under the Big Blue Bear at the Colorado Convention Center, and we'll stroll for a leisurely mile through downtown Denver. Each day's walk will be led by a Famous AuthorTM, Artist, Editor or Scientist who will not only lead the walk but will interact with the participants. Join luminaries like Frank Wu, David Brin, Jay Lake, Ellen Datlow, John Picacio, Lou Anders, Paul Cornell, Scott Edelman, Mary Robinette Kowal and Stephen H. Segal for a gentle, friendly stroll to get the day started on an upbeat note.
